Jeff Baker, a native of St. Peter, Minnesota, assumed the role of assistant baseball coach at Gustavus Adolphus College in 2015 and was promoted to Co-Head Coach in 2016. Baker is a 1982 graduate of Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he played infield for the Division I nationally-ranked Golden Eagles. He has enjoyed a long career in accounting, finance, and entrepreneurial pursuits.
Baker has coached many years of high school baseball and a number of highly competitive summer baseball programs. In addition, in 2002 he co-founded a baseball training facility in Ann Arbor, Michigan with former University of Michigan coach Chris Harrison, and former Minnesota Twins pitcher Geoff Zahn. Baker’s primary focus will be skill development of hitters and infielders.
“It is a privilege and blessing to return to St. Peter to coach baseball at Gustavus with my brother, Brad. We are focused on building a very successful baseball program at Gustavus. In that process, we are very excited to help our guys develop as baseball players, but more importantly, to develop as successful young men,” stated Baker.
Matt Lewis completed his seventh season on the coaching staff of the Gustavus baseball team in 2018, serving as the team's pitching coach.
Lewis joined the staff after a stellar pitching career at the NCAA Division III ranks. A 2007 high school graduate of Cathedral Prep in his native Erie, Pennsylvania, Lewis headed to Duluth, Minnesota where he continued his education at the College of St. Scholastica. While at St. Scholastica, Lewis put together one of the best pitching careers in the history of Saints baseball. Over his four-year career, Matt went a combined 25-5 in 41 appearances on the mound. After throwing 197.2 innings in a Saints uniform, Lewis finished his career with an ERA of 2.32. Carrying a career strikeout-to-walk ratio of 165-to-70, opponents hit .249 against Lewis through his tenure. Following his senior season in which he went 9-1 with a 1.73 ERA, Matt was named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Pitcher-of-the-Year. He was also named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) All-Midwest Region First Team and was bestowed honorable mention D3baseball.com All-American distinction at the conclusion of the season.
Matt received his bachelor's degree in K-6 Elementary Education from St. Scholastica in December of 2012. He currently resides in Le Sueur, Minnesota with his wife, Abby, and their two childen, Abraham and Genevieve.
Andrew Woitas joins the Gustavus baseball coaching staff in 2018 as a full-time assistant. Woitas, a 2010 Gustavus graduate, returns to his alma mater after spending the past seven years as an assistant baseball coach at Minnetonka High School. During that time, Woitas also coached a youth baseball traveling team, the Minnesota Blizzard.
In addition to coaching in the diamond, Woitas will assist the Gustavus recruiting efforts while taking on logistical elements such as budgeting and travel arrangements.
The Sleepy Eye, Minn. native earned MIAC All-Conference honors his senior season after starting all 38 games as an outfielder or pitcher. He batted .406 and led the team with 52 hits, seven doubles, three triples, and 65 total bases. Woitas’ 128 career hits rank 16th in program history and his 141 career games played is 11th.
Andrew is an independent broker through Mutual of Omaha with a primary focus on health insurance. He is engaged to Bridget Burtzel ’09.
